About the Library

SFGH’s Barnett-Briggs Medical Library provides relevant, specific, and accurate health-related information to support the patient care, patient education, clinical education, research, and program development activities at San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center.

The library has a comprehensive print and electronic collection, with over 3,000 print books, 60 print journal subscriptions, and 28 staff and public computers providing access to the UCSF Library's online books, journals, and databases.  The SFGH Library also licenses full-text book and journal resources for use by the Department of Public Health staff via the DPH computer network.

Informatics training is another important library function.  Library staff present free classes to SFGH and UCSF staff on database searching, citation management tools, and other topics related to health information. 

The Library is open to patients, patient family members, and members of the public who are invited to use the library’s print materials as well as the 16 public access computers to access online health information.  Reference librarians are available to help visitors find specific health-related information.

Driving Directions

From 101, take the CESAR CHAVEZ STREET/POTRERO AVENUE exit. Follow the signs to Potrero Avenue. Turn right on 24th Street.

Metered and non-metered street parking is often available in the area surrounding San Francisco General Hospital. You may also use the SFGH garage, entry and exit on 24th Street between Utah Street and San Bruno Avenue - Google Map. Parking is $1.25 per hour or $12.00 all day.- parking rates

Exit the garage onto 23rd Street, cross 23rd Street, and enter Building 9, to the left of the main hospital driveway. Go through Building 9 all the way to the end of the hall and you will be in Building 30. The library is to your left just before the end of the hall.

By BART

Exit at 16th Street and Mission BART station. Board the free YELLOW or YELLOW EXPRESS SFGH/BART shuttle van in front of the Burger King- shuttle schedule.  Get off at the second SFGH shuttle stop on 23rd Street and enter Building 9. Go through Building 9 all the way to the end of the hall and you will be in Building 30. The library is to your left just before the end of the hall.

Scope of Service

The San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center is an acute care hospital that operates under the jurisdiction of the City and County of San Francisco, as a part of the Department of Public Health. It is affiliated as a major teaching hospital of the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF).

The Barnett-Briggs Medical Library connects people with the information they need to make health-related decisions. We provide relevant, specific, accurate information and convenient access to print and electronic resources in support of patient care, patient education, research, education, and program development activities at San Francisco General Hospital Medical Center. We do this by maintaining collections, facilities, and services that meet the information needs of all SFGH staff and affiliates. Full scope of service statement

The library is open seven days a week, with regularly posted hours. The library is closed on University (UCSF) holidays. Holiday closings will be posted at the entrance.

Photocopying

The Barnett-Briggs Medical Library's photocopy machine is located on the first floor of the library. This machine is available for copying non-circulating library materials, including journal articles. Copy and printing price is $0.25 per page.

Printing

All computer printing requires either payment by cash or via departmental copy codes. For more information, please ask library staff at the front desk.

Payments

The photocopier accepts both money (bills up to $5 and coins) or departmental copy codes. Please check with your administrative contact for information about your departmental code.

Copyright Issues

Reproduction and redistribution of copyrighted documents may be restricted by Federal law (Title 17, US Code). The Library provides copying services for your convenience but does not assume responsibility for copyright issues.

Computer Facilites

The Barnett-Briggs Medical Library, along with UCSF and SFGHMC provide computer facilities for UCSF/SFGHMC faculty, staff and student use. Please read the Library's Computer Use Policy.

Workstations

The Library has 15 Pentium-based PC workstations running Windows XP and 1 Macintosh workstation running OS 10.3. All workstations have access to SFGH Library licensed resources and UC /UCSF-licensed resources, including biomedical databases,textbooks and full-text journal articles. Printing from these workstations requires payment (cash or departmental code).

The Library's Scanner PC workstation provides access to a color scanner (4800 dpi resolution) and a zip drive (100 MB and 250 MB diskettes) for copying large files. This workstation also provides access to UpToDate.

You must bring your own USB drives to save data. The scanner workstation also has a zip drive.

Double-click on the desktop icon to open the software program.

Under no circumstances should you attempt to:

  • Enter a startup password. Passwords are kept confidential for security purposes and are changed periodically. If you think an unauthorized person has a password, please let us know.
  • Restart or shut down a computer
  • Change computer settings
  • Install software

If the screen is showing a login prompt or if the printer needs paper or an ink cartridge, please ask Library staff for help.

Internet Access

The Library uses the Internet Explorer® and FireFox® web browsers. Double-click on the desktop icon to access the Internet. Since the Library's computer facilities resides within the UCSF network, library patrons can access UCSF-licensed biomedical and general reference databases.

Conference Rooms

The library offers three conference rooms for UCSF staff and SFGH staff to use. For room availability and scheduling, please contact the library circulation desk at 415-206-3114. Room keys can be checked out at the time of the appointment from the circulation desk.

Conference Room 101

Conference room 101 is located on the first floor of the library and can accommodate 10-15 people. Food and drink is not permitted in this room. This room includes:

  • Dry erase board
  • TV with DVD and VCR player
  • UCSF wireless internet connectivity

Conference Room 3208

Conference room 3208 is located on the 2nd floor of bulding 30 and can accommodate up to 35 people. It was intended to be a seminar/class/lecture room for UCSF. Due to the shortage of conference rooms throughout the hospital, the library permits other groups to meet there. Food and drink is allowed in this room. This room includes:

  • Dry erase board
  • TV with DVD and VCR player
  • LCD Projector and Plasmavision with Laptop Connectivity
  • House Phone
  • UCSF wireless and wired internet connectivity

Conference Room 3201

Conference room 3201 is located on the 2nd floor of the library. It can accommodate 10-15 people and food and drink are not permitted in this room. This room includes:

  • Plasmavision with laptop connectivity
  • UCSF wireless and wired internet connectivity
  • DPH-SFGH wired connectivity (To connect, laptops must be properly configured.)
